Semana Santa. Holy Week
Holy Week is the last week of Lent and the week before Easter or Resurrection Sunday. It includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. It is during the night between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday that the Easter Vigil is celebrated.
In Holy Week, the processions of elaborately decorated floats with images of Christ and the Virgin Mary walk slowly through the streets with groups of Nazarenos (penitents) wearing a robe, a sash around the waist and a high pointed hood to cover their heads and faces, called capirote. Sometimes they wear cloaks and sandals and some of them walk barefoot. Women in black, wearing mantillas and carrying candles, follow the floats. Drums and trumpets play solemn music and occasionally someone spontaneously sings a mournful saeta dedicated to the floats.
These heavy floats are carried on the shoulders of numerous members of the religious associations, Brotherhoods, that care for them throughout the year.
